Interests
Sleep and sleep deprivation; Communication, with particular emphasis on
the development, production and evaluation of media-based educational
programs designed to promote cognitive, attitudinal and behavioral change
My research interests focus on sleep deprivation and on communication of
educational messages through live presentations and the media.
My work on sleep deprivation involves reviewing the literature and
developing case history materials regarding the psychophysiology of sleep,
including the architecture of nocturnal sleep, sleep disorders, sleep and
performance, and sleep hygiene. I have a particular interest in sleep
requirements and performance with regard to students, executives and those
who are involved in the transportation industry. I have written a book and
many magazine articles for the layperson on sleep strategies and performance.
Undergraduates participated in developing reviews of the literature, as
co-authors of journal articles, and in preparation of the book manuscript.
I spend a considerable amount of time producing audio/visual materials
for educational presentations and on making educational documentaries for
national television. These materials, presentations and programs have focused
on such varied topics as new educational methods, outstanding teachers,
mental retardation, drunk driving, perception, psychiatry, child development,
sleep disorders and sleep and performance. Undergraduate and graduate students
are trained in the preparation of educational materials and film treatments
using psychological learning theory and social psychology, in video production
and in video editing. Depending on the nature of the work, students are
given course credit or are hired as assistants.
